Brown v EMA Decision and Team Fortress 2 Free to Play

Two news items I want to touch on today, one just came out today and one is about 4-6 days old.

First up, big news out of the Supreme Court today, as the Supreme Court shot down the Brown v. EMA (originally Schwarzenegger v. EMA) in a 7-2 decision. Justices Clarence Thomas and Stephen Breyer were both in favor of the bill with the other Justices opposed though two of them were a bit on the fence.

The bill, if it had become law, would have made it criminal offense to sell an M-Rated game to a minor. At the moment it's something that just handled in-house by game retailers. The problem with the bill is that no other medium has that. If a ticket-taker at a theater let's a child into an R-Rated film without parental permission it's not a crime.

This would have created a very slippery slope. The arguments made against the industry generalized the medium and the M-Rated games using only extra controversial ones like Postal 2 and Manhunt and ignoring the positive ones such as Bioshock, Metal Gear, etc. And by extension I felt that it generalized the players of said games.

In closing, I'm the glad that the Supreme Court made the right decision.

In other news, Valve continues to show why they are awesome by making Team Fortress 2 free to download and play now. A nice sense of humor and a dedicated online community make this a great opportunity for those who have never played it before.

Like any package those who buy it get more but you can experience all the maps and classes for free now, just not quite as much if you paid for it. Here's the link and I'll see you in the game.

  1. Good for the Supreme Court. Lately they've been somewhat crazy, but this shows that they still have some sense. Scalia FTW.

  2. Here here. There have been criticisms and praises from both sides and I'm planning on giving a rebuttal to the criticisms tomorrow.
